Abdullah Tarmugi (1944– ) Politician. Born in Singapore, Abdullah Tarmugi was educated at Raffles Institution and the University of Singapore, where he obtained a bachelor of social science (honours) degree. He joined the government service and worked in the Planning Department. In 1972, he obtained a post- graduate diploma in urban studies from the University of London. In 1980, Abdullah joined The Straits Times as a leader/feature writer and went on to become an associate news editor. From 1984 to 1993, he was research manager at Singapore Press Holdings. In 1984, he contested his first election and was elected member of Parliament for Siglap constituency. He held various posts in the Cabinet, including minister for community development (1996– 2002) and deputy Speaker of Parliament (1989– 93). He was elected Speaker of Parliament in 2002.
