satellite television Reception of direct- to- home satellite broadcasts is prohibited in Singapore. However, international broadcasters, such as ESPN, HBO and Disney, use satellite facilities extensively in Singapore to uplink their signals to satellites across the region. StarHub Cable TV also uses communication satellites to receive programming from major broadcasters, which is then monitored before distribution via the cable network.

Satellites are also used by MediaCorp’s Channel NewsAsia to receive international news and special events, and to uplink its programming across the region. In 1997, Television Corporation of Singapore International launched its first Mandarin satellite channel, Xin Shi, to cable television in Taiwan.

Since May 1991, organizations that need to access time- sensitive information for business purposes have been able to apply for a TV Receive- Only System. In 2003, these licences were extended to hotel, tourist and entertainment venues.
