Singapore Chronicle, The First newspaper to be published in Singapore. Founded by a former superintendent of police, it was also known as the Commercial Register. The application to publish it was sponsored by John Crawfurd, Resident of Singapore. Crawfurd was also its principal contributor. Started on 1 January 1824 as a single- sheet, two- page fortnightly, The Singapore Chronicle grew to four pages in 1831. It was closed down in 1837, perhaps due to competition from the Singapore Free Press.
