Tan, Bernard (1943– ) Scientist and composer. A professor of physics at the National University of Singapore since 2002, Bernard Tan Tiong Gie was a former acting head of the university’s music department. He was instrumental in the formation of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO), and is the longest- serving member of its board of directors. A largely self- taught composer, his compositions have received popular and critical acclaim. His A Classical Overture, Piano Concerto and First Symphony have been recorded by the SSO and released on CD.
