three- quarter- tank rule In April 1989, the government introduced laws designed to discourage motorists from driving to Johor to purchase cheap petrol. Originally, the ‘half- tank rule’ meant that motorists whose fuel tanks were less than half full were forbidden from crossing the Causeway. This was modified to the ‘three- quarter- tank rule’ in February 1991. In order to enforce this rule, customs officials at road checkpoints have been tasked with checking the fuel gauges of Singapore- registered cars bound for Malaysia. Drivers are fined and asked to turn back if their fuel tanks are found to be less than three- quarters full.
