Wong, Mimi (c. 1939– 1973) In 1966, Mimi Wong, a former cabaret queen, became the mistress of a Japanese mechanical engineer, Watanabe Hiroshi. In 1969, Watanabe’s wife and children arrived in Singapore to join him, and they lived together at 55 Jalan Seaview.

On 6 January 1970, just two weeks after her arrival, Watanabe’s wife Ayako was stabbed to death. Wong and her estranged husband, Sim Who Kum, were sentenced to death for the murder. Wong’s appeal to the Court of Appeal— on the grounds of diminished responsibility— was handled by David Marshall. The appeal failed, and Wong and Sim were hanged in July 1973.
